There are common things we do each and every day that should be pain-free. Picking up your child, grabbing a gallon of milk, bending over to put on your shoes – your daily life should not be hindered by back pain.

It is sometimes easier to put everyone else’s needs before our own. We can convince ourselves that we are far too busy to make an appointment, or that we are being strong by toughing it out. It is not a sign of strength, though. In fact, it can be downright careless.

MidSouth Pain Treatment Center is committed to helping you get your life back. You have been putting yourself last for long enough. At any of our several practices throughout Tennessee and Mississippi, we have skilled providers who can perform a variety of treatment options, so that you can choose what is right for you.

The Way You Move (or Don’t Move) Can Lead to Back Pain

Did you know that your spine is pivotal to how your body functions? It acts as the central communication system between your body and brain. Pain is not simply a discomfort; it is your body’s alarm system, indicating that it is struggling to function on important levels.

Many people don’t know the common causes of their back pain, or how easily their physical health can become jeopardized. If you have an office job – as many of us do – just sitting at a desk most of the day can cause compression of the discs. Don’t have an office job, but do have a long commute? Sitting in the car for long periods of time can put an immense amount of pressure on your lower back, making back pain commonplace among commuters.

While exercise can help your back stay healthy and young, doing it wrong can have an adverse effect. It is important to be sure you are aligning your body correctly and not lifting in an inappropriate (and painful) way. Some common exercises that can cause a lot of back pain when they are done incorrectly include lifting weights, doing crunches, and even running.

Should you find yourself experiencing back pain due to any of these situations, we hope you will reach out to us for help. We have a variety of techniques that can ease your level of pain and give you the chance to enjoy each and every day to the fullest. Let’s face it: life is far too short to be lived in any way that does not bring you joy, and chronic back pain makes the feeling of joy next to impossible.

Which Physical Ailments Can Cause Back Pain?

We have all heard phrases like, “That is the backbone of our society,” or, “You need to get a backbone.” There is a reason why people associate the back with strength, courage, and a solid foundation. It is the lifeline of our physical well-being. And our staff knows this. It is why we will work carefully with you to make a proper diagnosis before putting a plan together to best combat your back pain.

As our president and medical director Dr. Michael Steuer, MD, says, “It all starts with the right diagnosis. There is no room for guesswork when it comes to effective pain management.”

Making a proper diagnosis takes skill and expertise. There are many possible causes for the back pain you have been experiencing. In addition to common aggravators such as sitting too long or exercising incorrectly, there are other physical ailments that can cause back pain, as well. These include:

  • Arthritis of the Spine: Occurs when facet joints harden or grow thicker. The facet joints are an important part of our spinal health, due to the role they play in our ability to stretch, twist, and bend freely.
  • Sacroiliitis: Caused by inflammation of the sacroiliac joint, which is formed between the lower spine and a part of the hip bone. Many people complain that the pain worsens when they walk or stand.
  • Degenerative Disc Disease: Can be caused by aging. The material between our discs is similar to a rubber band. As we age, it can become debauched, causing a great deal of discomfort.
  • Radiculopathy: Impacts the nerves and is one of the most common issues that patients complain about. It can cause tingling, numbness, and weakness.

Don’t let this list overwhelm you! Our amazing team will listen to your symptoms, find the appropriate diagnosis, and create the right treatment plan for your needs. You do not have to go down this path alone. More importantly, you do not have to delay getting the help you need. You deserve to feel better.
